Sir: It is good to read that Mr Alexander Chancellor

at last feels that he is able to praise the Archbishop of Canterbury. Not quite, perhaps, like someone holding a can- dle to the sun but a similar idea. It is also reassuring to be told that we may 'glory in our good fortune' in regard to the Falkland Islands affair. However, I per- sonally find the concepts of 'good fortune' and 'luck' meaningless except as conve- nient ways of expressing pleasure/relief that things turn out favourably. As a Christian, I prefer the idea of divine providence and I find no difficulty in giving thanks to God, whether in a public service or otherwise. W.H. Lewis
