Messrs. Hoggs' series of "Books with a Meaning" affords a

sufficient

indication of the nature of its contents. It consists of a collection of short biographical notices, intended mainly for juvenile reading, of a bakers' dozen of untitled Englishmen, who have won fame either by their philanthropy or by their scientific achievements. Some exception may possibly be taken to Mr. Tillotson's selection, especially of his scientific representatives; but, on the whole, he has conscientiously performed his task of compilation, and has produced a book which is likely to be at once amusing and instructive to the class of readers for whom it is designed.
