Sir : Mr Nyman (17 January), whilst having endeared himself to us all with his taxidermic puns and lachrymatory wit, so obviously the result of earnest lucubration, really must beware of the critic's ultimate mistake, that of semantic mystification resulting in am- biguity. I find it extremely difficult to come to terms with his singhiozzando adjectives and generally could do with 'a little less embar- rassing passionateness' and rather more arialyti cal comment. For example, his comments on the Maxwell Davies piece would appear to state the obvious without really telling us any- thing about the music.

Nevertheless, we have found his articles, so rich in prose, make excellent librettos (judi- ciously pruned) for our far from silent and very significant musical party games.
