De Vries fan

Sir: May I welcome Paul Ableman to the small but select Peter de Vries fan club (31 January)? Unless, however, he has a good public library to hand he will have to go to considerable expense and trouble to catch up on the works of this prolific author. Many of your columnists condemn the Sixties as a wasted period. True enough perhaps – I'm beginning to forget what they were like – but at least there was a time when readable and literate authors like de Vries were available in paperback. How many of his books are available now? I am doubtful whether any of the last six even went into paperback at all. One doesn't expect much from Penguin these days, but surely someone might come forward to reprint de Vries. If he does he ought to start with Reuben Reuben.
