The Emperor of Germany has been ill throughout the week

with his old intestinal complaint, and has passed most of the time in bed. He was reported on Friday to be recovering ; but the attack alarmed his physicians, who know better than the public that in cases of vast age, the most dangerous symptom is any failure of ordinary powers. Old men can regain nothing com- pletely. The reports from San Remo are more favourable than ever, the Crown Prince being, in fact, represented to be in perfect health apart from his local ailment. Nothing, however, of an authoritative kind has been published, though an expres- sion much more hopeful than usual is attributed to the Emperor.
