It turns out that the North Carolina lynching affray reported

in all the papers last week, and upon which we commented in our last issue, never took place. According to a Reuter's tele- gram in Monday's papers, "reporters who were sent to Bakers- vile to obtain later particulars of the reported lynching and desperate affray there, have returned, and state that there has been no disturbance whatever, and that none is expected." It is curious how tolerant the American public and American newspapers are of false news. An English paper is furiously indignant at being taken in, knowing that its readers resent a hoax like a personal insult. In America, people seem only to. think that the reporters have been specially "smart."
