This year celebrates the bicentenary of the Hunter

This year celebrates the bicentenary of the Hunterian Museum at the University of Glasgow. William Hunter (1718-83) was an anatomist, teacher of medicine, Physician Extraordinary to Queen Charlotte, as well as a collector of paintings, shells, medals, anatomical and natural-history specimens, and books and manuscripts. His collections remained in London for several years after his death, before coming to the museum in 1807 (the Hunterian was the first museum to have a gallery of paintings). My Highest Pleasures, which runs until 1 December, contains 150 works displayed in two galler- ies, and reveals what a fine and astute collector Hunter was. Significant masterpieces include paintings by Rembrandt, Chardin, Zoffany (see 'William Hunter Lecturing', 1772), and newly discovered works by Inigo Jones. EA
