Miss Cushman has played two very opposite characters this week—Portia

in the Afercharit of Venice, with Wallack as Shylock; and Meg Merrilies in Guy Afannering. We did not see her in the latter character; but there can be little doubt that her performance was powerful, and tragically effective. Nre regret we saw her Pont: it lessens our estimation of her capabilities for personating Shaksperian characters, where delicacy and depth of feeling are to be expressed with gentle dignity and playful grace; and confirms our fears of her natural sensibility and intelligence becoming overlaid by an unfeminine and vehement mannerism.
