When such things as these are seriously put forward by

a well- known Labour leader, it is surely thus for members of Trade Unions throughout the country to ask themselves the precise meaning of democracy. We suppose that they really know, but they seem to forget, that it means the rule of the people ; that is to say, of the majority. If the majority desire a particular policy, however foolish It may seem to some of up to be, we who believe in true democracy will accept it. But we will not accept anything leas than the will of the majority. Any other method contradicts democracy. Such an alternative as Mr. Hartshorn proposes could come only in a nightmare, or from the brain, in waking hours, of some political philosopher who is suffering from an indigestion of political ideas.
