A revolution diary

Sir : With all respect to Miss Mitford—I am depressed that a serious political publication should publish her 'French revolution diary' in the form that it has.

Many of my (middle-aged) generation have delighted in her novels for their wit and charm. She has a unique ability for the oblique giggle at the things she obviously finds en- chanting. And a kind of sophisticated inno- cence very rare in women writers.

But, sadly, the two instalments from this diary (31 May and 7 June) have endorsed my awareness of the fearful disillusionment that the young are experiencing in every country in the world today. And can you blame them when serious journals are publicising this kind of thing? If 1 were a young person (which I'm not) I'd say, `Nancy Mitford may live about a mile from Versailles but around a million light years from the work! as we know

it.' • In my opinion that type of article can do more harm to this country than a lifetime of misguided governments.

If I were Mr Wilson, I'd have it 'framed' for election purposes.
