author tells us that when.he considers the character of the young people who will form the next generation he has misgivings as to the character of the next generation, p. 12. "If the time spent in party controversies were devoted to the public good, what great things might be accom- plished." "The power of Christianity as the friend of the poor has never been developed." Both these last fragments glorify page 19, and stand as we have printed them—quite alone, and unconnected with any either preceding or following matter. We believe these fragments to be fair specimens of the contents of the "Basket."
