Colonel Saunderson in his speech appealed personally to Mr. Dillon

to say whether the extracts which the Times had quoted from the Freeman's Journal showing that Mr. Dillon had associated and taken counsel with P. J. Sheridan long after the formal dissolution of the Land League, were or were not trustworthy, and offered to withdraw the charge altogether, so far as he was concerned, if Mr. Dillon could deny that it was so. Mr. Dillon refused to reply, and declaring his readiness to meet these charges in the proper way, appealed to the Speaker to protect him from these informal challenges, which the Speaker did.
