Pornuclear

Sir: James Hughes-Onslow in his admirable report (30 April) draws attention to the goings-on of Professor Singer at al at the Monash Bioethics Centre. I wonder what he thinks about an article last year in the 4 April 'Style' section of the Washington Post? This featured Bob Guccione,

publisher of Penthouse, Forum and Omni magazines. Guccione was said to have in- vested $40 million 'in genetic engineering research and experiments in nuclear fusion', presumably from the profits of his pornography empire. Whatever the rights or wrongs of nuclear fusion, mankind is go- ing to need to protect itself from those morally unqualified adventurers with unlimited funds who will be experimenting in these new areas of bio-technology. If the articles on the subject in Omni, Guccione's non-pornographic magazine of future science, are anything to go by, we could be on the threshold of a living nightmare.
