Mr. Hughes, M.P. for Lambeth, made a bold attack on

the 'domineering _habits of Trades' Unions in the Social Science Con- grese at Sheffield,—on their unfair attempt to dictate to non- unionists, their opposition to machinery, the murderous revenges .attributed to the unionists of Sheffield, and on the favour shown by them to the employment of infants. Many of-these practices were, we are happy to say, afterwards repudiated by the workmen, but that they have been only too true of many of the Sheffield -unionists is, we fear, beyond doubt, and the manly denunciation of them by the truest representative of working men and of Trades Unions in the House of Commons will contribute more than anything else to their discouragement.
