Soviet aims in Africa

Sir: If I had not actually read Mr Xan Smiley's article (30 September) on Rhodesia I would not have believed it Possible for anyone to have written at such length on the current situation there Without even mentioning its key factor. This is the well-established and quickly unfolding plan of the Soviet Union to control the Whole area of So-uthern and South-West Africa, the Middle East and the relating sea routes — the life-lines of Western survival. The question to be answered now is: When is the West going to stop assisting the enemy's advance and begin to defend itself? Only strong civilised governments in this last bastion of the still relatively free world backed by a military alliance of anticommunist countries can ensure the containment and eventual retreat of Soviet imperialism.

So far, the only country actively engaged in fighting the spearhead troops of our common enemy is (to our eternal shame) gallant little Rhodesia. Isla Atherley 32 Hanover Close, Charlbury, Oxford
