From America we learn that Sherman had united with General

Schofield and General Terry at Goldsborough, N9rth Carolina, on the 22nd March, the very day on which he had a week before told Schofield to expect him there, so that the Southern assertion that he had been driven out of his intended march on Raleigh by the engagement at Bentonsville is obviously invented. General Sherman claimed a decisive victory at Bentonsville, and in a general order thanked his men for their exertions, and promised them a rest and fresh clothing before further exertions. His head-quarters are now removed to Newbern, North Carolina, and he himself has been by sea to General Grant's head-quarters on the James River, where he held 'a council of war, at which the President was said to be present.
