From Mr Randhir Singh Bains Sir: I am shocked at

William Hague's state- ment that his party wants devolution to suc- ceed. This is tantamount to accepting the principle of federalism and, consequently, the break-up of the United Kingdom.

Federalism is the antithesis of a nation- state; it is the first step towards the ultimate break-up of a country — no wonder Alex Salmond, an avowed protagonist of Scottish independence, continues to support it. Even the United States of America, which started off with a federal constitution in 1787, had to shift the balance of power to the 'centre' to keep its territorial unity intact.

By adopting devolution, Tony Blair has undoubtedly secured his place in history. He is likely to be remembered as the prime minister who laid the foundation for the break-up of the United Kingdom. How would William Hague be remembered? Randhir Singh Bains 34 Shere Road, Gants Hill, Essex
