your correspondent inquires in the Spectator of August 8th appear in Steinmetz's "History of the Jesuits," Vol. I., p. 177, as " an old distich," in the following form :- " Bernardus valles, colles Benedietus amabat,

oppida Franciscus, magnas Ignatius urbes."
