Hesketh observed

Sir: Quite possibly, Lord Hesketh (Politics, 1 August) tones down his behaviour when in the company of those more powerful and clever than he.

Having observed the man at close quar- ters over a decade or so, I have to say, how- ever, that the impression too often given is that of an arrogant, pompous, and self- important creature, given to infantile tantrums and eye-popping rudeness. But legendary charm?

Perhaps Mr Heffer was confusing `leg- endary' with `mythical'.
