Wanted: these desirable properties

We're very fussy about the sites we choose for Asda Superstores. The more defunct they are, the better. An old mill, a rubbish tip and a derelict brickworks are three examples of eyesores we've taken and made useful for the community.

Once we've bought unsightly land, though, it doesn't stay that way for long. All our Superstores are carefully landscaped to look as attractive as possible.

What is an Asda Superstore? Superstores, pioneered in Britain by Asda, are five to 10 times larger than the average supermarket. In addition to 4,000 different lines of nationally known brands of groceries, Superstores also sell clothes for all the family, housewares, motor accessories, and electrical appliances.

Do Superstores reduce food prices? Yes, dramatically. In fact, by shopping

at Asda, an average British housewife with a family of four would save £40 a year on her family grocery bill. That's a 71/2O reduction*

This low price level exists because our size enables us to negotiate more favourably with manufacturers. All goods are delivered by manufacturers direct to each Superstore, thus eliminating warehouse costs. We pass these savings to customers.

Do Superstores reduce traffic congestion? Without doubt. Most High Streets are now inadequate for the greatly increased traffic volume of recent years. Because our Superstores are usually on the edge of towns, traffic congestion in town centres is markedly reduced, making High Street shopping more enjoyable.

All Superstores have their own free, store-level car parks for hundreds of cars. Do Superstores have an adverse , effect on town centre retailers? Or} the whole, no. High Street shopping becomes easier and more enjoyabl as some of the traffic of grocery shoppers, as well as delivery lorrie moves to an Asda Superstore on the edge of town. Our experience sho that thriving shopping centres do h suffer when a new Superstore opell Planning permission for Superstor Although there are Asda Superstor in Scotland, Wales and the Midland' most of our 25 are in the North of England.

As the Government and more local planning authorities approve planning applications for Superstor more and more British families will able to reduce their grocery costs substantially. And urban traffic congestion will be eased.
