The Swiss Government has threatened Monseigneur Mermillod with banishment unless

he resigns the office of Vicar- Apostolic over Geneva conferred upon him by the Pope. Geneva is evidently determined to have either a Catholic Church directed by the State, or none at all. In point of fact, we suppose Monseigneur Mermillod will leave the country, and issue his orders through some one else, which the " good " Catholics will obey, so that the result in Geneva, as in Prussia, of all this excitement will Probably be a system of secrecy, —the most difficult for the State to regulate, and the most fascinating to excitable religions minds.
