The polling for the vacancy at Rutland took place on

Tuesday, when Mr. Gretton, the Unionist and Tariff Reform candidate, was returned by a majority of 851 over the Liberal candidate, Mr. W. F. H. Lyon. The figures were 2,213 to 1,362. At the last General Election the Unionist majority was 483. On Tuesday the Unionist vote increased by nearly 200, and the Liberal vote fell by about the same number. Rutland has been a consistently Conservative constituency,

and in 1892, 1895, and 1900 the late Member, Mr. G. H. Finch, was not opposed. We must note here that the Irish Nationalists have put forrisrd Mr. O'Hanlon as a candidate for the Jarrow division of Aurhtun. The contest will thus be quadrangular. The decision of the Irish Nationalists is an act of defiance to the Government, no 'doubt dictated by the new, but unavowed, leaders of the Nationalist Party.
