Mr. Ernest A. Baker continues his excellent survey of The

History of the English Novel in a second volume, The Eliza- bethan Age and After (Witherby, 16s.). In this book we are given an account, with criticisms and illustrations, of transla- tions, of Euphuists and Arcadians, of pamphlets and character writing, of the beginnings of realistic fiction, and of the seventeenth century Utopias. It forms an excellent reference book, and at the same time may be used as an anthology illustrating the growth of English prose.
