Wednesday 5 May: Amid mounting currency speculation in Bonn, the German Bank refused to buy dollars and Herr Brandt was in London speaking with the PM about the EEC at The Guardian's 150th birthday party. Lockheed reached conditional agreement with Rolls- Royce over the an-2l1 and the Birmingham teacher, suspended for her part in a sex-educa- tion film, was reinstated.

Thursday 6 May: The EEC indulged in internal squabbles over the German monetary crisis, while the British Government is to provide £76m more for student grants and £120m more for the ite-211. A Croydon school governor resigned when seven pupils were caned for writ- ing 'obscene' essays.

Friday 7 May: A French judge told Mrs Des- ramault that she and her husband could share custody of their baby, Caroline—three months each. President Pompidou went on a flight in Concorde and Mr Powell thanked himself for the Tory election win in 1970. Saturday 8 May: France was angry with Ger- many at the Brussels talks on the o-mark and President Pompidou invited Mr Heath to Paris on 20 May, while Marshal Tito said he was not dead yet, Arsenal won the FA Cup and Ernie chose someone who holds no premium bonds for a £50 prize.

Sunday 9 May: The mark and guilder were floated, the schilling and Swiss franc were re- valued, the pound was unchanged and Mr Heath won a 200-mile ocean race. A car on the A23 killed two charity walkers.

Monday 10 May: France turned sweet over the problem of Commonwealth sugar and sour over New Zealand butter and a hundred Labour Mrs advertised their support for an enlarged EEC. Dr Christiaan Barnard performed his first heart transplant for two years.

Tuesday 11 May: Mr R ippon said the Common Market talks were 'making progress' but M. Schumann, French Foreign Minister, was de- spondent. Rolls-Royce and Lockheed signed a new ae-211 contract. Seven died in a West Lon-. don hotel fire and the Daily Sketch closed.
