We regret to notice the death of Lord.Lyveden, formerly Mr..

Vernon-Smith, son of Bobus. Smith, who died on Monday, at the age of seventy-three. Mr. Vernon-Smith was considered by the public almost a fool, so indiscreet -were his utterances on the hustings—for example, "I am not a.lord, but my friends console me by saying I look hie one "—and'in the Houses was often set. down as a sort of Parliamentary fop. He was, however, three times a Secretary of State, and owed his popular disrepute almost entirely to an unfortunately foppish manner. He was really a most.energetic man of business, who never.gave trouble,. couldform and carry out .very large.plans, could and did counsel his chiefs. ably, from the man-of-the-world stand-point, but was shackled somewhat by want of :strength of will. Personal resistance upset and annoyecLhim, as it.did when on the.hustings, and he had a sort of fear of uttering the clear and peremptory thought that was often in his mind. He wanted, in fact, to talk like a Bishop, and that does not do in politics.
