Professor Clifford's friends inform us that the epitaph on his

tombstone does not say, "I lived, and did a little work," but, "I loved," and ran, as a whole thus : "I was not, and was con- ceived; I loved, and did a little work ; I am not, and grieve not." The " loved " is a material alteration, as it introduces a spiritual element into the composititn, entirely inconsistent with an epitaph over any animal. Still, the love of an hoar is little to gain, in recompense for all that mind involves.
