Lord Salisbury has selected Mr. St. John Brodrick, now Under-Secretary

for War, to succeed Mr. Curzon at the Foreign Office. It was probably the best appointment in his power to make. Mr. Brodrick is a man of great industry, with full comprehension of the House of Commons, and a special power of making persuasive and lucid statements. He has other qualities besides, one of them being a resolute will ; but those first named are those most required in the Ambassador from the Foreign Office to the House. It is a most singular post—we should think a most disagreeable one—and it requires a man with considerable gifts. Success in it, however, marks its holder out for very high office indeed.
