We are not going to say anything in detail about

the misunder- standing between the American military forces in Europe and our own War Office and Foreign Office, except that we are glad that an

incident which ought never to have occurred has ended so happily. That it has so ended is, of course, due to the essential goodwill on both sides. The leading men in America now thoroughly understand that not only our people but our Govern- ment have the best will in the world towards America, and that sometimes if we officially do amazing things it is only out of our invincible oddity. Similarly our rulers are beginning to realize that none of the old conventionalities about America wishing to twist the lion's tail, or even to humiliate us or make us look ridiculous, has any truth. Let us hope that the two peoples will very soon realize this as fully.
