Portrait of the week

Enoch Powell is going into hospital for an operation on his foot—the opportunity will be taken (said Conservative Central Office) to remove traces of tonsil. For the party it was a difficult week—its leader calling 'damned lies' the Express report that he had fallen out with the party chair- man and would replace him: two days later the chairman was replaced. Na row, though, said Mr Heath. On the other hand, Ladbrokes were offering 10-1 on the Tories winning Cambridge; Ribocco won the St Leger at 7-2; and if you don't like these prices Ladbrokes are coming to the stock market so you can buy the book.

A tricky week for diplomacy, with Yorkshire under pressure from London not to send Brian Close's team to Rhodesia—'a species of comfort to the illegal regime,' said a Whitehall spokesman; no comment from the tucc's Sir Alec. Mongeneral returned from Poland; in Canada Mr Diefenbaker was sacked by his party. Non-surprise of the week came from Aden, where the Queen's Own Hussars banded over Falaise Barracks, built three years ago for f14 million as part of the permanent British base. But the Gibraltarians voted to stay British by 12,138 to 44.

-Our revered currency bumped glumly along the bottom, at its worst level since the November '64 crisis. Guards threatened to suspend running rail- ways. Vauxhall threatened to suspend making cars, some of the bills overdue from earlier months got into the August trade figures, and George Wood- cock called on the Prime Minister and said that he felt he bad been dealing with an economist, not a politician. And the paving blocks of Lom- bard Street now form the floor of a Devon cow- house.

On the domestic front, turmoil: the Reverend Stanley Grabowski, voted Roman Catholic of 1965 (by his American parish), married an air hostess in England: Rosemary Clooney, who married Jose Ferrer in 1953, divorced him in 1962 and re- married him in 1963, wants another divorce; and a girl of fifteen wrote to the Italian weekly, Epoca. It bad just been explained to her (she said) how babies come to be born, and she wondered whether elle was being teased, since she let her boy-friend do this fourteen months ago and no baby bad resulted.
