LONDON AND ITS RATS.

All naturalists know that the old black rat of England was driven out by the bigger, more voracious and destructive grey rat of Norway, which is said to commit damage every year to the extent of ten or fifteen millions. It is less well known that the old English rat still maintains its existence in certain small areas, one of which is Leadenhall Market. It was reported last week that a third variety of rat was driving out the Norwegian monster and defeating it in the struggle for life by virtue of its smallness and ability to travel on narrower ledges; even, it is alleged, along wires. What truth there. may be in that I do not know ; but all accounts I have heard Suggest that the alleged new rat is the old rat revived.
