Call it off

Sir: I have been mulling over in my mind for the past few weeks the problem of President Amin; and a possible way to keep him from attending the Commonwealth Conference in June.

It seems quite simple to me and it's surely not beyond the wit of man, and diplomatic man at that, to cancel the conference. Any host may cancel a party.

Besides which, I and many another do agree with you that the value of it all is decidedly questionable, and, off the cuff, I can remember little of lasting value coming from any at least of the recent ones.

I had thought to send my suggestion to the Secretary-General but realise only too well that my unknown voice would make no impression. And after all who would want to cancel a large conference of which he would be in charge? However, the host country, Britain, could certainly defer or cancel the project. Ergo, no party, no harp! if I may make a wry twist to the expression. (Mrs) Eileen M. Webster 28 Collie Street, Manurewa, Auckland, New Zealand
