Wheeler dealers

MY RACING correspondent, Captain Threadneedle, writes: The ingenious finan- cial bookie Stuart Wheeler of IG Index has worked out the Cabinet as a handicap. He can thus offer bets on ministers whose stock is going up or down. (Prospective ministers, too: the springer in the market is John Smith.) He will surely now extend this to the City, with a range of weightings from Governor of the Bank of England all they way down to chairman of a self-regulatory organisation. At the Stock Exchange, where Sir Andrew Hugh Smith is falling out of the handicap, John Kemp-Welch can make class tell. Don't miss the flying filly Ros- alind Gilmore (Building Societies Commis- sion) in her next engagement, the Dunregu- latin Stakes.
