Grating Dead

From Scott Rasmussen Sir: Regarding Charles Spencer’s paean to the Grateful Dead (Arts, 2 April): he might be of a different opinion as to the merits of this band had he gone to the University of California at Santa Cruz, as I did. Even though I attended during the early Eighties, the spirit of the Sixties was kept alive at the school, in part because there were always a few students in each dormitory who insisted on playing their recordings of this grotty band at any hour, day in and day out. The Monterey Bay area is one of the most beautiful locales in the state; pity the ‘soundtrack’ that accompanied it was so grating. But I do commend Mr Spencer for confessing to a rather embarrassing vice, as well as for his use of headphones when listening to the band’s music in public. I wish I’d been graced with neighbours like him.
