ROMAN PAVEMENT AT WOODCHESTER

SIR,---The Roman pavement at Woodchester, near Stroud, Glos.. which for size and excellence of de- sign and execution I have heard described as unsur- passed even in Rome, is uncovered again after more than ten years and will remain so until the 24th of this month. All the work has been done by the local vicar and his gallant band of voluntary helpers and, while the pavement itself has been declared (naturally enough) an Ancient Monument, no money is forth- coming from the Treasury or Arts Council for its proper future protection against frost, etc., a state of affairs which I submit would be incredible in any country save Britain and in any era save our own.
