Dark and obnubilated affairs

Sir: Your contributor Mercurius Oxonien- sis (26 July) writes an excellent appreciation of the character and qualities of the late Dean of Christ Church, Dr C. A. Simpson. He adds that the Dean succeeded in empty- ing the Cathedral, thus showing that he him- self can scarcely be a member of its con- gregation.

On the advice of the college chaplain Dr Simpson instituted a new service for under- graduate members at 5.30 p.m. on Sundays in term. This has always been much better attended than the previous 'College Prayers' on Sundays at 10 a.m., which had lost fav- our with undergraduates today.

As for the other and purely 'Cathedral' services, they are always well attended, and possibly (though I cannot quote exact fig- ures) the numbers have been larger than they formerly were.
