CHESS

Triumvirate

Raymond Keene

The coincidence of dates between the world championship and the Kleinwort- Grieveson British championship (both starting on 28 July) could either be con- strued as a traffic jam or a bonus to chess publicity. The British Chess Federation originally wanted to launch the Kasparov- Karpov match on 15 August, but the pressure of international events, especially the Dubai Olympiad, led Fide to insist on a 28 July start.

The British championship at South- ampton ended inconclusively in a triple tie between Grandmasters Speelman, Mestel and Chandler and it looks now as if the sponsors, Kleinwort-Grieveson, will have to dip their hands into their pockets again to finance the play-off for the title.

My spies tell me that the small screen coverage of the championship match has been so popular that the TV companies are interested in turning the play-off into a TV spectacular. This should sweeten the pill when the bill arrives for the extra contest.

Full results at the top (out of 11) were: Speelman, Mestel and Chandler 8; King, Flear, 71/2; Basman, Adams, Hodgson, McDonald, Conquest, Condie, Watson, 7. The incredibly young Michael Adams has produced an International Master result and the evidence suggests we may have a second Nigel Short on our hands.

Here are some games from South- ampton from the victorious trio:

In the world championship match at the Park Lane Hotel Karpov won game 5 and levelled the scores. Kasparov then took his first time-out. When the match was re- sumed on Monday game 6 was agreed a draw after the adjournment, giving the position so far:
