We are getting very near the end of 1949, and

a number of people seem to be under the impression that the advent of 1950 means the beginning of the second half of the century. A daily paper, for example, announces the early publication of a series of articles by distinguished writers on " The Turn of the Century." Well, there is nothing like being premature, but in fact the century will not be performing that gyration for more than twelve months yet ; the first half-century ends at midnight on December 31st of next year, not of this year. The same misconception was widespread fifty years ago, half the population being convinced that 1900 was the first year of a new century. It was not ; it was the last of an old one.. * * * *
