Sir: Digby Anderson (`Christmas comes but once a week', 2 December) writes with feel- ing about the inability of many now to wait for pleasure.

About 25 years ago I was sent an unso- licited credit card by Lloyds Bank which had with it the usual mass of literature. The main message, which I remember well, was: `Take the waiting out of wanting'. Needless to say, I cut it in half and returned it to the bank (which incidentally had refused me an overdraft and a mortgage).

Perhaps the rot set in with credit cards?
