Tories care

Sir: Lord Longford states (Tabour, the King and I', 25 November) that in 1936 he said 'I am a socialist because I am a Chris- tian. I said the same quite recently in the House of Lords.' What a pity that during the last 59 years he has not acquired the (Christian) humili- ty to see that there are many other equally sincere citizens who can say with equivalent conviction 'I am a Conservative because I am a Christian.' There is of course still time for him to confess his dogmatic arrogance and to repent. It is a myth — sadly peddled by many clergy in high places both Anglican and Roman Catholic — that only the socialists care for the poor. Bishop David Sheppard et al should reflect that the poor do much better in a capitalist society, where wealth is created, than in a socialist state, where it is so often squandered.
