Narvaez must have a strong confidence in the patience of

Heaven. His Council of War has actually condemned four persons accused of circulating clandestine publications to twenty and six- teen years' penal servitude in chains,—a doom which, to men not accustomed to labour, must be far worse than death. One man, it is said, has been condemned to forced labour for reading one of these publications. It is reported, though we doubt the report, that the nun Patrocinio has been ordered to quit Spain, and it seems certain that Marshal Serrano, who as President of the Senate remonstrated against the coup d'elet, has been suffered to return to Madrid.
