STATE AIDED ELECTRICITY, Quite a feature of the meetings of

gas companies is the amount of really useful and interesting information appealing to a much wider circle than those represented by the share- holders present. This -was certainly the case at the recent meeting of South Metropolitan Gas, when the chairman, Dr. Carpenter, made some most interesting observations on the processes involved in the production of Low Tempera- ture coal. As will be seen from his remarks, which appear in another column, he looks ahead to a time when we may see the total abolition of raw coal as fuel. It will also be noted that Dr. Carpenter challenged the State-encouraged competition of electric energy, describing that competition as unfair to the older lighting and heating industry of the country. Incidentally, a further interesting point in Dr. Carpenter's speech was his comments upon excessive devotion to sport on the part of the modern generation. At first sight, such a subject may seem to have been scarcely germane to a business meeting of shareholders, but Dr. Carpenter pointed the connection very' clearly and very strikingly. * * * *
