The war of Mr Jones's teeth

Sir: In an article in your issue of 2 February, Mr Auberon Waugh makes the statement that the salaries of university teachers have just gone up by 7-} per cent. This is wholly untrue, as the most elementary investigation would have estab- lished. The salaries of university teachers are at present under consideration by the National Board for Prices and Incomes, and the last increase they were given was one of 5 per cent in April 1966.

The statement has caused considerable concern and an immediate correction is vital. I suppose that Mr Waugh is entitled to an opinion, but before making comments he should ensure that he has the facts right. I shall look forward to a clear retraction at the earliest possible moment.

F. Garside Assistant General Secretary, Association of Uni- versity Teachers, Bremar House, Sale Place, London W2 iluheron Waugh writes : Mr Garside is quite right. I was referring to the recent rise in the salary of full-time teachers in technical colleges and institutes, which brought them into line with university teachers. And the best of luck to uni- versity teachers in their claim.
