...and for Labour

But there are things which relate to the silences of the Labour Party as well. If returned to power this time what would Labour, which after all, also made an effort to join the EEC, do — withdraw or renegotiate? Would the party which, all too recently, attempted to enforce a compulsory incomes policy, very like to that now put forward by Mr Heath, keep its promise never to undertake such an effort again? Or would Mr Wilson once more put himself in thrall to the fashionable opinions of the Treasury, and again restrict wage negotiations? Or, if he did not, would he proceed with the absurd proposition in the Labour manifesto that prices can be controlled while wages and salaries run free? A very clear answer to just these questions will be required of any Labour politician who believes that his party can save the country.
