NEWS OF THE WEEK.

IT is is difficult to state with any accuracy the position at the front at the close of the week. On Wednesday a well. marked aggressive movement on the part of the Germans, stated to be conducted by General von %luck, and witnessed by the Emperor himself, began in the centre of the French line to the north and north-east of Soissona. Fighting at these points on. Wednesday and Thursday was severe, and though the determined German attacks were met by vigorous French counter-attacks, the French had to some extent to give ground. There was nothing in the nature of defeat, but the loss of a certain number of trenches.
