Sir: It is surprising that Simon Raven (2 January) believes that he can make a valid assessment of the Greek regime after a week in Corfu and two days in Athens. As to the former it is rather like going to Majorca to find out about Franco. Corfu has always been isolated. The island manages quite well thank you on foreign currency. In many respects what the British Government does is more relevant than what happens in Athens. In- deed the Colonels purged only two officials. (Compare Crete where nearly everyone of importance got the sack). Perhaps he can be for- given for this—but not for his bland assertion that the present regime is the least corrupt! How on earth can you ascertain the facts about a corrupt government when that very same government controls the press? Did he not hear passing whispers about the Coca Cola con- cessions or the Athens callgirl scandal? Of course the previous government had some corruption —but at least there was a chance of it being exposed. Brian Mcphee 3 Glenloch Road, NW3
