Alpine boat people

Sir: High-lifer Taki's description of Gstaad as the Mecca of the camel people (9 January) skilfully ignores an equally (if not More) important influence on the seasonal `jet-setisation' of Gstaad, namely the inva- sion of the 'boat people', those mega-Greeks Who control vast floating fortunes (mainly due to those 'oily' camel people), with which Taki himself is well acquainted. I would venture to say that Gstaad in winter bears a greater resemblance to a Greek ,wedding reception at Claridges, toasting the consolidation of tonnage, rather than an Alpine Mecca. This is why, no doubt, langlauf buff Taki chooses to go there, for Gstaad, amongst accomplished Alpine skiers and Ianglaufers, is pretty near bottom of the list — clones of a feather stick together.
