Sir: I am enormously grateful to you for publishing Professor

Congdon's article. What the article did for me was to give intellectual respectability to my visceral Euro-scepticism. I have always felt, in a Colonel Blimpish sort of way, that Englishmen, or Britons, are not Europeans in any dimension of the word, and Chunnel or not we are extraordi- narily lucky to be an island. But I had recently felt vaguely guilty about such feel- ings, believing them to be possibly out of tune with present-day realities. Professor Congdon has made me feel all right about myself again. Tell him to send me a bill.
