With Havelock from Allahabad to Lucknow, 1857. (Sampson Low, Marston,

and Co.)—This volume contains extracts from letters written by an officer in the First Madras Royal Fusiliers to his wife. It cannot be said that we learn anything from them ; yet no one will read them without interest. The patience, courage, and gaiety which the young writer shows—he was in his twenty- sixth year—gives us an idea of the spirit which made the English garrison hold their own in the hour of utmost peril. Lieutenant Groom served some five months with Havelock's column, was wounded in a sortie after entering Lucknow, and died sixteen days afterwards. "You may be sure that everything will turn out for good eventually, so we must look forward with brave hearts till happier days come," were the last words that the young soldier wrote.
