News of the Week

DYING the week there has been a shower of contri- btitions to the dismission on the'eondition of indus- try and tinemploYment. On Monday the Committee on Industry and Trade, under the chairmanship of Sir Arthur Balfour, which was appOinted by Mr. MacDonald in 1621., published its final ReporL On Tuesday the Melch-At-Tprner group adopted a Report on unemploy- ment- which .hitd already received independently the approval both of the employers who are working with Lord Wichett and of the -General- Council of the Trades Union Congress. Lastly, Mr. Lloyd • George has issued through Messrs. Cassell & Co.' a 6d. pamphlet entitled We Can Conquer Unemployment, expounding his pledge of last week. All these contributions are welcome because they will provoke deeper thinking on matters which are already much in the mind of the public and also; one is glad to be able to • add, very much on its conscience. * * * *
