From the Bishop of Ton bridge

Sir: I gratefully accepted your offer of The Spectator at a reduced rate for clergy — for which I thank you. However, the writing about Mr Heath on the front page this week is altogether unacceptable and I ask to have my name taken off the mailing list.

I am not particularly pro-Heath. He lacked imagination and political flair. Nor am I pro-Tory, though many of my friends are in that party. Nevertheless, your attack on a man who has carried the immense burden of the Prime Ministership during extremely difficult times is indefensible. You speak of patriotism but the tone of the writing I would regard as wholly un-British and unfair.

George Hutchinson probably had it right in the Times. Conservative Central Office is out of touch with the nation. Stock-broker Tories tend to be

unaware of Britain North of the Thames.
